What To Watch This Weekend: New Streaming Movies And TV Shows On Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV And More (2024)

What to watch this weekend? That’s the big question I ask myself whenever I start typing up my weekend streaming guide. There’s rarely any shortage, and certainly not when you consider all the great stuff in your backlog!

For instance, I’ve been making my way through the first season of The Terror on AMC+ and it’s absolutely phenomenal. I never got around to watching it back when it came out, and I’m sort of glad I didn’t because now I can watch it for the first time. It’s a spooky historical drama with some very creepy, scary stuff that goes on when two British ships in the 1840s get lost trying to map the Arctic Passage.

The cast includes so many great British actors from shows like Game of Thrones, Rome, Chernobyl and so forth, including Tobias Menzies, Jared Harris, Paul Ready, Ciarán Hinds and so many more. It even has Sian Brooke from Blue Lights.

That’s your bonus recommendation this week. Read on to find all the best new TV shows and movies to stream this weekend.

New Shows And Movies (And Sports!)

The Olympics (Peaco*ck)

The Summer 2024 Olympic Games began this Friday in Paris. The games will stream live on Peaco*ck (as well as on various broadcast channels) from July 26th - August 11th. The trailer above is for a comedic round-up series Olympic Highlights With Kevin Hart & Kenan Thompson.

The Dragon Prince Season 6 (Netflix)

I’m happy to report that the sixth season of The Dragon Prince is everything I hoped it would be and more. In my review, I say that it’s the best season of the family-friendly Netflix Original series since Season 3. If you haven’t started this series yet, I really hope you do. There’s nothing else quite like it on TV at the moment: A big, epic fantasy series that’s aimed at the entire family filled with complex characters, mystery and adventure.

The Decameron (Netflix)

The Decameron is a historical comedy that looks very much in the same vein as The Great or My Lady Jane (both are fantasticread my My Lady Jane review here). It follows a group of Italian noblemen and ladies from Florence as they hide out in a country estate while the world around them falls ill with the bubonic plague. The series is based on the book of the same name by Italian author, Giovanni Boccaccio. I don’t recognize many of the cast, but I did spot Amar Chadha-Patel in there who played Boorman in the Willow TV show. He was probably the best thing about that series, which was pretty dreadful overall. Still, despite not liking the show, Boorman was a great character and I hope to see more of Chadha-Patel. The Decameron is getting a just-barely-Fresh at 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, and slightly lower with audiences.

Tokyo Swindlers (Netflix)

This Japanese crime thriller is directed by Hitoshi One based on the book by Ko Shinjo. It follows a group of land swindlers—con-artists basically—as they get in way over their heads and an investigation threatens to bring their operation down.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (Netflix — July 27th)

Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Elizabeth Debicki and Alicia Vikander star in this spy movie from director Guy Ritchie who most recently released his crime series The Gentlemen on Netflix. It’s been years since I’ve seen The Man From U.N.C.L.E. or anything with Armie Hammer in it. I remember enjoying this one thanks to the strong cast. I saw Debicki recently in the excellent spy miniseries The Night Manager, which I can’t recommend highly enough.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (Prime Video)

Tom Cruise’s latest Mission Impossible suffered at the box office, largely due to its long run-time and the fact that it was the first of a two-part film duology, though you’ll notice they dropped the “Part 1” from the title and marketing.

I thought it was a really fun movie, however, and I hope we get the sequel soon. Critics gave the film a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences trailing at a respectable 94%. Basically, if you enjoy fun, over-the-top spy thrillers you really have no excuse not to watch this now that it’s on Prime Video.

Deadpool & Wolverine (In Theaters)

I went to this one on opening night and am working on a review still, but the long and short of it is that this movie is a ton of fun and you should definitely go see it at the movie theater. Filled with hilarious cameos and a great odd couple in Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) it’s the best Marvel movie in a very long time, and welcomes the Merc with a Mouth to the MCU in the most irreverent, foul-mouthed, absurdly violent way possible. Good times.

Ongoing Shows

Here are some of the shows currently airing (or that have just ended) that I’m watching and/or writing about.

House of the Dragon Season 2 — Sundays on HBO/Max

What a phenomenal season of television House of the Dragon has been so far. I’m just sad that we only have two episodes left! Epic dragon battles, new dragonriders, romance, intrigue, politics, war—this season has it all. Hell, it even has some cameos from Season 1 actors we thought were gone for good. You can read my review of the most recent episode here.

Presumed Innocent — Fridays on Apple TV+

Recently, The Boys and The Acolyte streamed their finales. Now, Apple TV’s Presumed Innocent has wrapped as well, airing its 8th and final episode this past week. Overall, I think it was a really strong show though I’m still sitting with the ending and trying to make up my mind how I feel about it. Definitely something you should check out if you enjoy a good mystery with some courtroom drama.

The Responder — Thursdays on Britbox

I’m slowly making my way through Season 1 of The Responder, a tense British crime drama on Britbox starring Martin Freeman. Season 2 is airing now and if you enjoy UK police dramas, definitely check it out.

Sunny — Wednesdays on Apple TV

One Apple TV show ends, another begins. I still haven’t started Sunny yet but it’s at the top of my list thanks to a strong cast, with Rashida Jones at the top of the ticket, and a cool premise: “Living in Kyoto, Japan, a woman's life is turned upside down after her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As consolation, she receives Sunny, a domestic robots made by her husband's electronics company.”
