Do hypnotists actually work? ›

Scientific evidence supporting the benefits of hypnotherapy has been limited, but is growing. Some studies show “promising” results or “may be helpful in” conclusions. The strongest evidence supporting the use of hypnotic treatments comes from research on hypnosis for treating pain, IBS and PTSD symptoms.

Hypnotizability is a trait that follows a normal distribution: 10% to 20% percent of people aren't very hypnotizable, and about the same proportion are highly responsive; everyone else falls somewhere in between.

The central phenomenon of hypnosis is suggestibility, a state of greatly enhanced receptiveness and responsiveness to suggestions and stimuli presented by the hypnotist.

Contrary to what you might see in movies or during a hypnotist stage act, people don't lose control over their behavior during hypnosis. They usually remain aware during a session and remember what happens.

Alfred A. Barrios, Ph. D., presented a review in the journal "Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice" and in American Health magazine, where he provided the following recovery rates for different therapies: Hypnotherapy: 93% success rate after an average of 6 sessions.

Hypnosis is considered to be a safe treatment when performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner. In rare cases, however, a patient may have unwanted side effects such as: Dizziness. Headache.

Most stage hypnotists are skilled at creating the illusion that they possess a magical and mysterious power over other people. There is, in fact, no such "power." Hypnosis is a state of consent and cooperation. The only control the hypnotherapist has over you is the control you allow him to have.

Potential obstacles include: misconceptions or preconceived notions about what hypnosis is, such as unconsciousness, amnesia, or sleep. lack of rapport with your therapist. fear of losing control or being “programmed”

How does hypnosis work? During hypnosis, a trained hypnotist or hypnotherapist induces a state of intense concentration or focused attention. This is a guided process with verbal cues and repetition. The trance-like state you enter may appear similar to sleep in many ways, but you're fully aware of what's going on.

“It's important to note that self-hypnosis is a skill that can be learned and practiced like any other,” Williams reassures. “With time, patience and practice, most people can learn to self-induce hypnosis.” While most people can induce a trance-like state, that doesn't mean it's always a good idea.

Hypnosis can't make you or your personality change by itself. A hypnotist can't make you rob a bank. It can't make you quit smoking if you really don't want to stop. It can't alter your core values or principles or make you do anything you don't want to do.

Hypnosis is promoted as a treatment for many conditions or issues. Research does provide some support for using hypnosis for some, but not all, of the conditions for which it's used. Research shows strong evidence for the use of hypnosis to treat: pain.

Suggestions during hypnosis can cause dynamic changes in brain activity [6]. Areas responsible for processing cognition and emotion show greater activity during hypnosis, as well as hypnosis-induced changes in functional connectivity between anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the large neural network [4,7].

For some issues, such as smoking cessation or weight loss, results may be seen relatively quickly, sometimes within a few sessions. For other conditions, such as anxiety or addiction, the process is often more gradual, and it may take several weeks or months of treatment for the individual to see improvement.

Hypnosis does work and it works immediately and is permanent when applied correctly. Just like with regular medicine if you only treat the symptom then the effects will not last. Eventually, the person will experience an emotional trigger that will drive them back to the unhealthy behavior or lifestyle.
